(my first review! it felt a bit necessary) I don't entirely understand why people are so insistent on annihilating Disney's Star Wars trilogy. Is it trendy? Is it upset 40+ year olds missing the way it used to be? I wasn't alive when the originals were released, I grew up on the prequels (which people trashed when they came out. so I reckon I can be a bit more objective about these things.
Anyway. was it perfect? Not really. It was a bit predictable, it probably could have has 20 minutes cut out to speed things up a bit.
Is it a 1/10? Abso-bloody-lutely not. It was a fitting ending to a decent trilogy - Ben was reunited with his parents, Rey discovered her heritage and came into her power and the gang finally saved the day. It made me laugh, it had my heart in my throat a few times, and it made me cry. And I think that's the point - it's not an Oscar-winning masterpiece, but I went into the cinema expecting a Star Wars film and that's exactly what I got, with all the trimmings. The acting, the effects and the suspense were great, the action was fun, the stakes were high and the climax was powerful (aided by John Williams and his incredible score, as usual. He's really good at hitting us right in the feels, y'know? The cameos were an exciting throwback, it made me feel nostalgic for a time I never lived in.
So maybe it's just me being "the youth" but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe more "fans" should let go of their preconcieved Star Wars notions - the originals aren't all you idolise them to be, that's just childhood wistfulness and misplaced nostalgia talking. They were good, sure, but so is this. So please (for once) stop complaining, and enjoy what is, objectively, an exciting film.
