Today, The Tracking Board has posted a rumor saying that Sony Pictures is developing a new film adaptation of the classic story which Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick will produce. Los efectos especiales fueron interesantes, la fotografía y paleta de colores fue de mi agrado, la banda sonora estuvo impecable logrando acentuar cada situación de la película apropiadamente. El trasfondo pienso yo que va mas allá del simple título del filme, sino que retrata con bastante credibilidad las relaciones sentimentales tóxicas con la posterior violencia intrafamiliar que esto conlleva. Ojalá le vaya bien en la taquilla, vale la pena ir a verla. Valoración: 5 ⭐ de 5 ⭐.

The book took five years to complete with one year off for what Ellison termed an "ill-conceived short novel. " [8] Invisible Man was published as a whole in 1952. Ellison had published a section of the book in 1947, the famous "Battle Royal" scene, which had been shown to Cyril Connolly, the editor of Horizon magazine by Frank Taylor, one of Ellison's early supporters. In his speech accepting the 1953 National Book Award, Ellison said that he considered the novel's chief significance to be its "experimental attitude. " [9] Before Invisible Man, many (if not most) novels dealing with African Americans were written solely for social protest, most notably, Native Son and Uncle Tom's Cabin. By contrast, the narrator in Invisible Man says, "I am not complaining, nor am I protesting either, " signaling the break from the normal protest novel that Ellison held about his work. Likewise, in the essay 'The World and the Jug, ' which is a response to Irving Howe's essay 'Black Boys and Native Sons, ' which "pit[s] Ellison and [James] Baldwin against [Richard] Wright and then, " as Ellison would say, "gives Wright the better argument, " Ellison makes a fuller statement about the position he held about his book in the larger canon of work by an American who happens to be African. In the opening paragraph to that essay Ellison poses three questions: "Why is it so often true that when critics confront the American as Negro they suddenly drop their advanced critical armament and revert with an air of confident superiority to quite primitive modes of analysis? Why is it that Sociology-oriented critics seem to rate literature so far below politics and ideology that they would rather kill a novel than modify their presumptions concerning a given reality which it seeks in its own terms to project? Finally, why is it that so many of those who would tell us the meaning of Negro life never bother to learn how varied it really is? " Ellison's Invisible Man straddles two important literary movements: the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement and you can see odes to both and to neither in it. Indeed, Ellison's resistance to being pigeonholed by his peers is evident in his statement to Irving Howe about what he deemed to be a relative vs. an ancestor. He says, to Howe: "rhaps you will understand when I say that he [Wright] did not influence me if I point out that while one can do nothing about choosing one's relatives, one can, as an artist, choose one's 'ancestors. ' Wright was, in this sense, a 'relative'; Hemingway an 'ancestor. ' And it was this idea of "playing the field, " so to speak, not being "all-in, " that lead to some of Ellison's more staunch critics. The aforementioned Howe, in "Black Boys and Native Sons, " but also the likes of other black writers such as John Oliver Killens, who once denounced Invisible Man by saying: “The Negro people need Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man like we need a hole in the head or a stab in the back.... It is a vicious distortion of Negro life. " Ellison's "ancestors" included, among others, The Waste Land by T. Eliot [10]. In an interview with Richard Kostelanetz, Ellison states that what he had learned from the poem was imagery, and also improvisation techniques he had only before seen in jazz. [11]. Some other influences include William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Ellison once called Faulkner the South's greatest artist. Likewise, in the Spring 1955 Paris Review, Ellison said of Hemingway: "I read him to learn his sentence structure and how to organize a story. I guess many young writers were doing this, but I also used his description of hunting when I went into the fields the next day. I had been hunting since I was eleven, but no one had broken down the process of wing-shooting for me, and it was from reading Hemingway that I learned to lead a bird. When he describes something in print, believe him; believe him even when he describes the process of art in terms of baseball or boxing; he’s been there. " [8] Some of Ellison's influences had a more direct impact on his novel as when Ellison divulges this, in his introduction to the 30th anniversary of Invisible Man, that the "character" ("in the dual sense of the word") who had announced himself on his page he "associated, ever so distantly, with the narrator of Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground ". Although, despite the "distantly" remark, it appears that Ellison used that novella more than just on that occasion. The beginning of Invisible Man, for example, seems to be structured very similar to Notes from Underground: "I am a sick man" compared to "I am an invisible man". Arnold Rampersad, Ellison's biographer, expounds that Melville had a profound influence on Ellison's freedom to describe race so acutely and generously. [The narrator] "resembles no one else in previous fiction so much as he resembles Ishmael of Moby-Dick. " Ellison signals his debt in the prologue to the novel, where the narrator remembers a moment of truth under the influence of marijuana and evokes a church service: "Brothers and sisters, my text this morning is the 'Blackness of Blackness. ' And the congregation answers: 'That blackness is most black, brother, most black... '" In this scene Ellison "reprises a moment in the second chapter of Moby-Dick", where Ishmael wanders around New Bedford looking for a place to spend the night and enters a black church: "It was a negro church; and the preacher's text was about the blackness of darkness, and the weeping and wailing and teeth-gnashing there. " According to Rampersad, it was Melville who "empowered Ellison to insist on a place in the American literary tradition" by his example of "representing the complexity of race and racism so acutely and generously" in Moby-Dick. Political influences and the Communist Party [ edit] The letters he wrote to fellow novelist Richard Wright as he started working on the novel provide evidence for his disillusion with and defection from the Communist Party. " [12] Plot summary [ edit] The narrator, an unnamed black man, begins by describing his living conditions: an underground room wired with hundreds of electric lights, operated by power stolen from the city's electric grid. He reflects on the various ways in which he has experienced social invisibility during his life and begins to tell his story, returning to his teenage years. The narrator lives in a small Southern town and, upon graduating from high school, wins a scholarship to an all-black college. However, to receive it, he must first take part in a brutal, humiliating battle royal for the entertainment of the town's rich white dignitaries. One afternoon during his junior year at the college, the narrator chauffeurs Mr. Norton, a visiting rich white trustee, out among the old slave-quarters beyond the campus. By chance, he stops at the cabin of Jim Trueblood, who has caused a scandal by impregnating both his wife and his daughter in his sleep. Trueblood's account horrifies Mr. Norton so badly that he asks the narrator to find him a drink. The narrator drives him to a bar filled with prostitutes and patients from a nearby mental hospital. The mental patients rail against both of them and eventually overwhelm the orderly assigned to keep the patients under control. The narrator hurries an injured Mr. Norton away from the chaotic scene and back to campus. Dr. Bledsoe, the college president, excoriates the narrator for showing Mr. Norton the underside of black life beyond the campus and expels him. However, Bledsoe gives several sealed letters of recommendation to the narrator, to be delivered to friends of the college in order to assist him in finding a job so that he may eventually re-enroll. The narrator travels to New York and distributes his letters, with no success; the son of one recipient shows him the letter, which reveals Bledsoe's intent to never admit the narrator as a student again. Acting on the son's suggestion, the narrator seeks work at the Liberty Paint factory, renowned for its pure white paint. He is assigned first to the shipping department, then to the boiler room, whose chief attendant, Lucius Brockway, is highly paranoid and suspects that the narrator is trying to take his job. This distrust worsens after the narrator stumbles into a union meeting, and Brockway attacks the narrator and tricks him into setting off an explosion in the boiler room. The narrator is hospitalized and subjected to shock treatment, overhearing the doctors' discussion of him as a possible mental patient. After leaving the hospital, the narrator faints on the streets of Harlem and is taken in by Mary Rambo, a kindly old-fashioned woman who reminds him of his relatives in the South. He later happens across the eviction of an elderly black couple and makes an impassioned speech that incites the crowd to attack the law enforcement officials in charge of the proceedings. The narrator escapes over the rooftops and is confronted by Brother Jack, the leader of a group known as "the Brotherhood" that professes its commitment to bettering conditions in Harlem and the rest of the world. At Jack's urging, the narrator agrees to join and speak at rallies to spread the word among the black community. Using his new salary, he pays Mary back the rent he owes her and moves into an apartment provided by the Brotherhood. The rallies go smoothly at first, with the narrator receiving extensive indoctrination on the Brotherhood's ideology and methods. Soon, though, he encounters trouble from Ras the Exhorter, a fanatical black nationalist who believes that the Brotherhood is controlled by whites. Neither the narrator nor Tod Clifton, a youth leader within the Brotherhood, is particularly swayed by his words. The narrator is later called before a meeting of the Brotherhood and accused of putting his own ambitions ahead of the group. He is reassigned to another part of the city to address issues concerning women, seduced by the wife of a Brotherhood member, and eventually called back to Harlem when Clifton is reported missing and the Brotherhood's membership and influence begin to falter. The narrator can find no trace of Clifton at first, but soon discovers him selling dancing Sambo dolls on the street, having become disillusioned with the Brotherhood. Clifton is shot and killed by a policeman while resisting arrest; at his funeral, the narrator delivers a rousing speech that rallies the crowd to support the Brotherhood again. At an emergency meeting, Jack and the other Brotherhood leaders criticize the narrator for his unscientific arguments and the narrator determines that the group has no real interest in the black community's problems. The narrator returns to Harlem, trailed by Ras's men, and buys a hat and a pair of sunglasses to elude them. As a result, he is repeatedly mistaken for a man named Rinehart, known as a lover, a hipster, a gambler, a briber, and a spiritual leader. Understanding that Rinehart has adapted to white society at the cost of his own identity, the narrator resolves to undermine the Brotherhood by feeding them dishonest information concerning the Harlem membership and situation. After seducing the wife of one member in a fruitless attempt to learn their new activities, he discovers that riots have broken out in Harlem due to widespread unrest. He realizes that the Brotherhood has been counting on such an event in order to further its own aims. The narrator gets mixed up with a gang of looters, who burn down a tenement building, and wanders away from them to find Ras, now on horseback, armed with a spear and shield, and calling himself "the Destroyer. " Ras shouts for the crowd to lynch the narrator, but the narrator attacks him with the spear and escapes into an underground coal bin. Two white men seal him in, leaving him alone to ponder the racism he has experienced in his life. The epilogue returns to the present, with the narrator stating that he is ready to return to the world because he has spent enough time hiding from it. He explains that he has told his story in order to help people see past his own invisibility, and also to provide a voice for people with a similar plight: "Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you? Par exemple, si tu écris "merci pour tout" sans rien après, tu dois mettre un T, mais si tu écris "merci pour tous ces cadeaux", tu dois mettre un S, car "tous" est suivi d'un mot au pluriel. Spies in disguise marcy. 6:00 AM PST 12/16/2019 by Will Smith, Tom Holland and Ben Mendelsohn voice the main characters in a computer-animated film from Fox Animation. Disney will take the money and run from Spies in Disguise. Inherited from Fox when the studio was gobbled up by its crosstown rival, this manic piece of spy vs. spy mayhem is narratively challenged in a major way and resembles nothing Disney itself would have made on its own. Undemanding young viewers will go with the flow and laugh at all the obvious, albeit mostly lame, gags, and the combination of Will Smith and Disney over the holidays assures a quick but lucrative haul. Inspired by a six-minute 2009 short by Lucas Martell called Pigeon: Impossible that bears little resemblance to its big-bucks offspring — other than for a bird’s inadvertent mucking about in top-secret warfare technology — this is a rambunctious international adventure yarn equipped with very little of the narrative care that goes into most of Disney’s own animated ventures. Antic and frantic, Spies is very much a one-joke affair, which is fine for a short but woefully insufficient for a 101-minute feature. The joke, which is funny for a couple of minutes, is that Lance Sterling (Smith), American secret agent supreme, is inadvertently turned into a blue pigeon by precocious young science genius Walter (Tom Holland), whose attempts at creating an invisibility potion have gone a bit astray. Very proud of his physical attributes, most notably his bulging shoulders and chest, which his long spindly legs hardly seem like quite enough to support, Lance insists that his colleagues “unbird” him at once, but Walter hasn’t quite gotten the hang of that yet. There’s a mad dash through Washington, D. C., to push the action quotient at the expected level, whereupon it’s off to wannabe exciting interludes at a Mexican resort, a secret weapons lab in the North Sea and then Venice, where Lance meets a great many more pigeons. Under the circumstances, maybe he would have been happier just staying there instead of heading home again. What’s striking about the script by Brad Copeland and Lloyd Taylor, from a screen story by Cindy Davis, is how exceptionally unmotivated the whole story is. Numerous excuses are invented for big action sequences all over the world, but it never feels like there’s a rhyme or reason to where the characters are going or what they’re doing once they arrive. Yes, there’s a supervillain of sorts, a terrorist named Killian (Ben Mendelsohn) who’s into weaponized drones, but he and all the rest of the goons could not be more generic. Little kids playing good guys and bad guys could come up with something this basic on a moment’s notice, and there’s no special dimension or plain old imagination here to generate genuine engagement or even just old-fashioned fun. With Smith voicing the lead, things can’t be all lame all the time, and he does get off some nice bons mots and amusingly egocentric remarks from time to time. However, his preening and condescension quickly become overbearing, and if you can’t even muster a sense of risk for your characters that’s at least artificially engaging, a larky action-suspense piece is going to leave a good deal to be desired. The lone wolf spy schtik is laid on way too thick in this movie, as despite walter showing his way is better lance is like 'nope i got this' will smith seems to be phoning in his performance for some of it as his dialogue lacks effort in places.
I think they left some obvious story beats for a sequel which imho are lances 'flock' drink the antidote/ serum/ use the bow tie insta change gizmo, and 'lovey' who is kinda 'dark' would make an interesting villain with jeff and the other one being her henchmen.

The Ace: He's the world's greatest secret agent for a reason. Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Pigeon Lance is bright blue, with a small mark resembling a bow tie on his chest. Awesome Mc Coolname: And how! Badass in a Nice Suit: His regular attire consists of a snazzy black suit, and he's the world's greatest secret agent. Baleful Polymorph: He gets turned into a pigeon by one of Walter's inventions. Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has rather thick eyebrows. Blue Is Heroic: His pigeon form is mainly blue. But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Didn’t remember Killian until he pointed out the mission, saw him as just another bad guy he faced before. Chick Magnet: Literally — when Lance turns into a pigeon, Lovey tries to cozy up to him, much to his annoyance. Clear My Name: He's framed as the mastermind behind Killian's schemes, and his goal in the movie is to prove that it wasn't him. Furry Reminder: This bit: Walter: Lance, look at me. Lance: L-look at you?! I can't not look at you, Walter! I can see my butt and your face at the same time! Expy: Of James Bond. Or specifically, Daniel Craig 's take on the character. Freudian Excuse: His The Lone Wolf mentality and actions stem from not wanting to see any more of his fellow agents die in the line of duty. Ink-Suit Actor: His (human) character design greatly resembles his actor, Will Smith. Irony: Before he become one himself, Lance had a low opinion of pigeons, seeing them as "rats with wings". Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Starts out with a massive ego ( though not without a reason), and fires Walter for incorporating one of his cutesy gadgets into a mission despite it proving to actually be effective in the battle. He also blames Walter for turning him into a pigeon ( despite him being the one who took the potion before Walter had a chance to explain what it does), and spends the first half of the movie hating Walter's guts because of it. Because of his status as a pigeon and being framed for a federal crime, he does suffer a Break the Haughty moment, and spending time with Walter caused him to warm up to him and realize that his inventions are useful after all. It's also revealed that a lot of his mannerisms stem from not wanting to see any more good agents die in the line of duty. Jerkass Has a Point: If you take away the morality of Walter's Do No Harm practices, Lance's contempt for him at the beginning of the movie isn't exactly unmerited. Regardless of the effectiveness of Walter's unorthodox gadgets, it doesn't change the fact that Walter meddled with Lance's equipment behind his back without his consent, and doing so caused Lance to be affected the same as his assailants and got a knife dangerously close to his throat due to being caught off-guard. Such behavior in spying and government businesses is inexcusable since as little as one miscommunication or mistake can mean the difference between success and failure, or life and death. Lance was the most merciful compared to how Joy Jenkins would've handled the news. The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: While sneaking into Kimura's hotel, he is unable to stop himself from eating some discarded food from under a table. Lance: Why am I eating food off the ground? Why does it taste amazing?! Morphic Resonance: While in pigeon form, he retains his Big Ol' Eyebrows while the lower half of his body is a darker blue as a holdover from his suit. The bowtie also appears as a bow-shaped mark on his chest. My God, What Have I Done? : He has a minor silent one when Killian reveals that the attack Lance led in Kyrgyzstan killed Killian's entire crew and horribly disfigured him. Scary Black Man: Well, as scary as a Will Smith character can get, but he's definitely not someone you'd want to fight against. Walter Beckett A scientist at the same agency Lance works at, whose non-violent (yet still effective) gadgets are ridiculed by fellow scientists and agents alike. Lance turns to him to make him "disappear" after he gets framed. Adorkable: He is very awkward around other people. All of the Other Reindeer: Was always treated as "weird" by everyone else, from when he was a child up to his young adult years. Ambiguous Disorder: Walter is socially awkward and secluded, is gifted in science, has a bizarre obsession with pigeons (and to a lesser extent, Korean pop culture), expresses his knowledge in pigeons via random facts about them, has strange ideas when it comes to his inventions, and is often considered "weird" by everyone because of this. Obviously, Walter heavily shows signs of having Asperger's Syndrome, although it's never directly stated nor are the movie's intentions clear. Child Prodigy: He's been studying chemistry and technology since he was a young child. Childish Tooth Gap: He had this as a child. CloudCuckoolander: Both as a child and as a young adult, Walter is considered "weird" by his peers because he insists that criminals should be dealt with non-lethally. However... The Cuckoolander Was Right: Walter's gadgets, such as the "kitty glitter", do ultimately serve as effective distractions for criminals, and Walter is successfully able to non-lethally bring Killian into custody using his "inflatable hug" device. Disappeared Dad: No mention is ever made of his father, even in the prologue where he's a child. Expy: Of Ben Whishaw 's version of Q. Gadgeteer Genius: Provides the gadgets that Lance uses. Ink-Suit Actor: His character design is a blue eyed caricature of his VA, Tom Holland. In Name Only: He has the same name as the main character from Pigeon: Impossible, and that's about it. When Will Smith's character turned into a pigeon, I was sure the film would nosedive with groan-worthy comedy, but there was an ample amount of satisfying visual gags to go along with it. The spins on spy genre films were fairly clever, too, all the way down to the stylish opening credits. This is probably the most effort I've seen Blue Sky put into a film. I was charmed and entertained through a majority of it. The characters do come straight out of an assembly line with backstories and ideologies that have been explored too many times to count. The villain is especially forgettable. The film's touches on the typical messages regarding "teamwork" and "good vs. evil" but nothing that resonates uniquely. Fill out an application stating you have a bachelor of science in electrical engineering, your work history is a management position in an I.T. company, you have no arrests and you only need the job because you're going back to school to complete your masters and this is the only position that you can find that will work with your hours. You will not be hired, I have done this. As you can imagine the pay is not the best at these jobs. If they're good workers, a person can move up the ranks. Or you can get a skill like forklift driver. Companies pay forklift drivers a better salary than a person who is walking in with no skills. However you're still poor and the work conditions are not the best.

I love St. Louis. I'm living in West Virginia now and boy was that a change. Thank you, TCM. This was the perfect movie for the holiday season. I really looked forward to Judy singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." She wore a beautiful, stunning red velvet dress (the pattern was similar to my own wedding gown which I made, only in cream satin) and little Tootie was so sweet playing with the monkey (I think) musical toy. The song is always repairing whatever is wrong with our hearts or our lives at the time, and tears come even more. every time I hear her sing this. I was also looking forward to the angst-ridding maneuver of Tootie batting the snow-persons our of their misery; getting rid of her bottled up anger. Rose is so sweet; trying to be so sophisticated. Too bad they tried to get girls married off too young in those days. Nowdays, young women go to college, and marriage is way off in the distant future.
The cakewalk song had racist connotations, as if the lovers in the song were going to cohabitate under the bamboo tree or were they really going to get married with the benefit of clergy according to the mores of early 20th century America? The lovers were "of dusky shade" which seemed to connote supposed moral superiority on the part of the singers of the song or at least the lyricist. That time period reminds one of minstrelsy, another post-Civil War (late 19th and early 20th centuries) white people's parody of African-American culture. "I like-a-you and you like-a-me. I'm gonna change your na-a-ame." The lovers were of royal blood. Wouldn't the lyricist have them speak in better English? No. It was fashionable at the time to have black people and Native Americans depicted as less intelligent than "those white folks.
Tootie talking about her dead dolls was so disturbing. Some were even buried in the ground. Her Halloween scenes were quite unusual too, what with the neighborhood kids divvying up who was gonna scare and "kill" which grownups. Their costumes were strange, too, as I noticed the boys dressed as women, and the girls dressed as male hobos and bums. I think Margaret O'Brien was around eight years old in this movie, but the character was five years old. Margaret was too big and too intelligent to be age five here. That part was not convincing. LOL.
The family is all musical. Lon is so nice to the girls. As usual, Marjorie Main is wonderful in the part of the maid-cook-whatever. She and Mrs. Smith organizing the ketchup-making scene is such a hoot, and of course Grandpa has to have his authoritative taste-test. The Dad is a pushover deep down, pretending to give the family what they don't want (I would want it, though. the move to NYC - and yet knowing that their lives are forever interwoven into their old community. Grandpa and John and the tuxedo situation are so cool. The goofy boys dancing with Judy at the ball are so outrageous. the large boy, the small boy and the tall boy who thought the ballroom was a speedway. Of course, they are not the *boy next door. Did I see June Lockhart in this movie? She was stunning. Did I leave anybody out? The girls on the trolley were neat, and I think one was Julie Newmar. Esther and John both pretending to need help turning out the lights in the house was so precious.

It defies common sense why Blumhouse, the company that boasts Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity on its horror roster, would put its stamp on this pathetic imitation of scare cinema. The idea was to jam horror jolts into the old Fantasy Island TV series, which dabbled in the supernatural when it wasn’t ripping off The Love Boat by stranding D-list guest stars in clichéd stories. ABC’s Fantasy franchise, which ran from 1977 to 1984 (B. C. to millennials), starred Ricardo Montalban as the mysterious Mr. Roarke, and Hervé Villechaize as his diminutive French assistant Tattoo, who would run up to a bell tower and shout, “Zee plane! Zee plane! ” every time new guests arrived on their Pacific island to see their fantasies come true — for a price, of course: 50 grand. No one pays in this rebooted version, except audiences. All five passengers are winners of a TV contest to realize their fantasies on a gorgeous island (it’s Fiji! ). All five are — surprise — hot bodies with deficiencies in the brains department, since they barely question their host, Mr. Roarke, now played by a white-suited and way overqualified Michael Peña, and his assistant, Julia (Parisa Fitz-Henley), when the pair warn about being careful what you wish for. Did the filmmakers go back to the future and learn how a hard R-rating doomed the box-office hopes of Birds of Prey? For whatever reason, in this thrill-free rehash that reaches career-crushing lows in writing, directing, and acting, lame is the name of the game. It’s hard to believe that director Jeff Wadlow ( Truth or Dare) needed two co-screenwriters, Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs, to cobble together this padded twaddle. Their claptrap script hardly qualifies as a first draft. A machete-wielding psycho, played by Michael Rooker, runs around the island connecting the stories, and trying to chop everything to bits. Is he the real author of the screenplay? Wadlow’s lazy excuse for a movie hits a brick wall of incoherence long before a climactic twist that’s been telegraphed from Scene One. The only genuine, blood-curdling scream incited by this stupefyingly dull time- and money-waster comes at the end, when the notion dawns that Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island is meant to spawn sequels. Stop it now, before it kills again.

Most are familiar with the movie; storywise, it is a little creaky and hasn't necessarily survived well over the years: Kelly is an American artist living in Paris. He falls in love with a young girl (Leslie Caron) who is in a loveless relationship with one of his best friends (Guétary). Kelly is also in somewhat of a loveless relationship with his financial sponsor (Nina Foch). You can probably guess the rest. The glowing color, fantastic music by Gershwin (arrangements by the talented Conrad Salinger), and the amazing choreography of Gene Kelly will keep this one a classic for years to come despite a predictable plot. Just the ending ballet alone is a masterpiece; the art of Toulouse Lautrec and Utrillo comes to life with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron dancing their hearts out to some of the most imaginative choreography (Kelly's) in years. The Freed Unit at MGM was at their peak when this movie was made, and this is one of the last great ones that it created. It is a real shame that with how fantastic the picture is (the colors literally leap off the screen, and it really adds to the appreciation of what an artistically beautiful visual feast this movie is) that the sound cannot match. Although it is clear and free of problems, the Gershwin music just begs for a 5. 1 or 7. 1 surround track; unfortunately, due to the age and availability of the original elements, this is not possible. It won numerous gongs for its choreography and costume and direction. I felt that the lead players in the cast also deserved an Oscar, especially ‘perpetual motion, ’ Gene Kelly, and the charming Leslie Caron, whom I thought a total delight to look at and watch? Add Gershwin’s music into the mix and this just couldn’t fail. The direction by Vincente Minnelli (Liza’s dad) produced a superb spectacle. I bought the plain DVD version (not the Bluray) but I have to say that the picture quality and colour is just amazing for a film of that age. The final dance / ballet scenes are rather long at 16 minutes but it is a wonderful finale, apparently those scenes alone cost a half a million dollars to make! Most of the other top M-G-M musicals display a broader streak of comedy, and the supposed 'best musical of all time 'Singin' in the Rain' is wittier, more complex and even has relevance as an account of Hollywood history. Oscar Levant's forced cynicism plays against the mood, as the show never makes a full statement about artistic vagabonds. The sentiment and heart in Paris is really a fusion between the personalities and the music. Leslie Caron's perky smile and laugh are winning but she seems truly heartbroken only when backed by Gershwin. It's less a variety musical than a romantic fusion. Gene Kelly's performance in the big `An American in Paris Ballet' integrates dance and music so closely together that he seems to personify the spirit of George Gershwin. Busby Berkeley and to some extent Michael Powell's big dance extravaganzas made the camera an active participant in the flow of music and dance, but Kelly's choreography unites music, dance camera and performance into a seemingly living entity. Add to that John Alton's intense colour lighting (with difficult, choreographed lighting changes) and the Ballet may be the most complicated dance ever put on film. It's an almost perfect collaboration. Vincente Minnelli's spectacular design motifs here are in much better balance. The ballet progresses through a parade of classic painting styles that mimic artists like Utrillo, Renoir and Van Gogh. Perhaps the best compliment for the Ballet is that it does full justice to George Gershwin. The music stands alone as a supremely emotional experience, and the Ballet only heightens it. There's none of the oddball mismatches of music and visuals that one remembers from certain segments in Fantasia. `An American in Paris' is Hollywood filmmaking worthy of superlatives. Blu-ray Video Quality – The video quality on this Blu-ray release is in a full 1080p encoded image in the 1. 33:1 aspect ratio. The first thing that will catch your eye with this release obviously, is that residual 1950′s Technicolor looks. Perhaps it was the intention, but I do have to say at several points in the film the colour palette goes from harsh to seriously intense, not by any means "popping" off the screen in a pleasing manner. Now, don't get me wrong, scenes doused in neutrals from the wardrobe to the set design actually look very nice, though there is still the subject of the flesh tones existent. The flesh tones harbour the most blush-esque of bright orange hues, and this look continues through the entire film, fluctuating in that Technicolor way you've seen on other elder classics, as an actor moves across the screen passing the horizontal flickers all shades of the palette alternate in tones. The blaring colour palette is heightened by the definite solid black level; so solid, some scenes in which actors are clothed in an abundance of black actually gives them an appearance of animation. This solid black level may be dead on, but it tends to bring out the hard-core saturation, which is often bleeding with more bold hues, creating a near glare at the presence of such vividness, and more importantly, taking away the presence of detail. The late Gene Kelly had an extremely expressive face, and though it needs to be understood that this film has endured some aging, much of the detail of facial features is absent; this quality also applies to all other visual definition aspects of the film, from the costumes, to the set design as well. A good example of this is at the runtime of about 32 minutes and 20 seconds, where Milo is wearing an open back dress, and the scene involves some shots from behind her. Where we would normally see the contours of the shoulder blades, the bleeding/pixilation and harsh colour saturation make the visible flesh tone of her back appear as one smooth piece. Overall, you have to give credit where it is due, and it is evident that this release is what it is with special efforts, as are most classic catalogue titles that have made their way to Blu-ray recently. Keep in mind that when you see this film on Blu-ray what you are seeing was created by filmmakers over 50 years ago, and through so many different processes, this will be the best presentation you can own at this time. Purists will also surely be proud, as this release hasn't gone through significant changes, still possessing many qualities that will keep it in a very original form. Though, when comparing a film from this era to others of the genre that have made their way to Blu-ray. Blu-ray Audio Quality – The audio quality on this release is presented in 1. 0 Dolby Digital Mono. It was a great choice on behalf of Warner Bros. to stick with the original mono track for this films Blu-ray release, providing a more sincere, and realistic experience connecting to a time long past, not to mention the film's content that is present would have made for a label of "overkill" if a more voluminous track had been included. There are just a few issues that occur on this audio track though. Occasionally, there is hissing present, usually during a pause in a musical number. Also, at least 2 to 3 times during the abundance of tap dancing that occurs throughout the film, the sounds of "tapping" are out of sync with what we see happening visually. On a more positive note, all of the vocals are carried out nicely, and shouts and emphasized vocals have a bit of an acoustic quality. Overall, this audio track suits the film in a justifying manner. Um Americano em Paris free downloads. Gene Kelly came up with some really grand ideas for musicals while with MGM. Here he's at the top of his creative powers working with the Arthur Freed musical unit. Hard to believe when you watch An American In Paris that the players never left the back lot at MGM.
The magic of An American In Paris is due to the creative editing under the direction of Vincent Minnelli and the sets that MGM designed blended with some background establishing shots. The idea of the film originated with Kelly who wanted simply to do a film with a lengthy ballet sequence involving George Gershwin's tone poem An American in Paris. It sounded good to Arthur Freed who approached Ira Gershwin who said fine with him as long as they used other Gershwin material.
Gershwin got the kind of deal for Gershwin music that Irving Berlin normally got. Not one note of non-Gershwin music is heard in An American in Paris. Listen to some of the background music and you will hear things like Embraceable You and But Not For Me which are not real musical numbers.
Another guy who was a fair hand at writing lyrics, Alan Jay Lerner, wrote the story which admittedly is a thin one. All about an ex-GI played by Gene Kelly who after World War II never left France, just settled into an apartment on the Left Bank and proceeded to become a starving artist. He lives with eccentric composer Oscar Levant and does that ever sound like a redundancy.
Two women are interested in him. Another expatriate American played by Nina Foch who wants to sponsor him as a painter if he'll reciprocate in other matters. But Kelly falls for a shop girl played by Leslie Caron in her film debut. Caron also has musical comedy star Georges Guetary interested in here.
Of course the plot is just an excuse to sing and dance to the music of George Gershwin. An American in Paris happens to be the first film I ever saw as an in flight movie on the first airplane trip I ever took. I still remember flying back from Phoenix Arizona to Kennedy Airport seeing Gene Kelly doing I've Got Rhythm. My favorite number in the film however is Tra-La-La which Kelly sings and dances all over the apartment with Oscar Levant playing the piano. At one point Kelly dances on top of the baby grand piano.
In a book about Arthur Freed, I read a quote where he said in the American in Paris ballet sequence was to be done with the background of the French impressionists which he felt the public would take to rather than a realistic setting on the streets or back lot. So it happened that way. Kelly had done lengthy ballet sequences in Words and Music, The Pirate, and On the Town. But this one topped them all. Still does in my opinion and that includes some of Gene Kelly's later films.
In a surprise upset at the Oscars, An American In Paris was chosen best picture for 1951, beating out the heavily favored A Streetcar Named Desire. I guess fantasy trumped realism that year. Big budgets also have an upper hand in these things as well.
Still An American in Paris is one of the best movie musicals ever done and since the studios no longer have all that creative talent under one roof, something less likely to be repeated.

I remember when I was 5-6 years old ( now I'm 22 ) my grandpa had a collection of classical music in cd format and Bolero appeared in one of those, I had a strong attraction to this one first time I heard it, every time we went out in the car I always asked him to put this theme and my grandpa always talking to me about this kind of music and history (I can barely remember those conversations, but he did. very wise man my grandpa, very good memories from childhood, he is still alive and we still talk about music, history, painters and a lot more with the only difference that I'm able now to have some drinks, and a good wine is always there in our conversations, very glad to have that man by my side.
