She meets Aldo, and soon the two of them find something in each other that has long been absent in their lives. As they grow closer and closer, the joy in both of their lives slowly returns. Watch free someone to live for you. While many holocaust survivors openly express rage and uncontrolled bitterness towards their persecutors, other survivors display only an emotional deadness and a pervasive feeling of being alone and scared. In the movie "Fateless, Gyuri, a young man sent to Buchenwald, moves from a childlike innocence to world-weariness in the span of one year. When he comes home, he feels more alone than he did at the camp and even expresses a sort of homesickness for the camaraderie he felt. As a disfigured Holocaust survivor in Christian Petzold's "Phoenix, Nina Hoss' shattered look, repressed emotions, and shaky voice feel so natural that her gradual awakening to life epitomizes a Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Hungary's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2019 Academy Awards, Barnabás Tóth's ( Camembert Rose" Those Who Remained (Akik maradtak) asks us to rethink our idea of what liberation meant to those just released from the camps. Based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi and set in Budapest between 1948 and 1953, the suffering of the Holocaust years are deeply etched on the face of Doctor Aládar (Aldo) Körner (Károly Hajduk, One Day. a slender, gaunt man of about forty who is going through the motions of his Ob-Gyn practice at a Budapest hospital, but the look in his eyes cannot hide the trauma of his wife's death and that of his two young boys.
Coming from the Israelite Community Orphanage, Klára (Abigél Szõke, X - The eXploited. a mature-looking 16-year-old girl, sees Dr. Körner, for a gynecological exam to find out why her puberty has come so late. At first, angry, fearful, and wound into a tight knot, when she reaches out and suddenly embraces the doctor, it is clear that she is seeking more than an exam but a respite from her desperate loneliness. Outspoken in her disdain for her classmates at school and her great-aunt Olgi (Mari Nagy, Budapest Noir" with whom she lives, Klára only begins to reveal her repressed humanity when Aldo responds to her like a fellow human being in pain, not a wounded animal.
Bringing the film to life with her tremendously affecting performance, Szõke refuses to return to Olgi even though she loves her and wants her to be happy. Instead, she moves in with Aldo who acts as a foster father, sharing custody with her aunt. He makes the rules, however, and is strict about physical contact, especially when she crawls into bed with him at night. Gradually, both open up though to each other. They talk about God, her parents, the sister she feels guilty about not being able to save from death, and, in a tender scene, he shares with her his photo album from before the war.
Though Aldo strictly adheres to the rules of propriety, their developing relationship raises some eyebrows, and the interest of Soviet operatives. Amidst talk of a Soviet crackdown on personal freedoms, Aldo and Klára do their best to be discreet, but it does not prevent others from gossiping. In one instance, after being seen in a park laying her head on Aldo's lap, Klára is defiant when interrogated by a Communist official. Similarly, Pista (Andor Lukáts, The Whiskey Bandit. Aldo's colleague at work, says that people have disappeared during the night and tells him that he has joined the Communist Party and has been asked to inform on him.
Those Who Remained is an intimate look at two damaged souls who have been bruised and shaken by life but are now ready to begin the reconstruction of their life, a process which will, in Percy Bysshe Shelley's phrase "lift the veil from the hidden beauty of the world." Knowing that any expression of the love they feel for each other will push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable, both realize that their protestations of innocence will not be enough to keep them safe, and that they must now reach out to others, bringing solace and joy in a world in dire need of both.

HD Linkek: HD Linkek: Cím: Akik maradtak Eredeti cím: Akik maradtak Játékidő: 88 perc Bemutató: 2019. szeptember 26. Forgalmazó: Budapest Film Rendezők: Tóth Barnabás Szereplők: Urbanovits Krisztina, Auksz Éva, Hajduk Károly, Horkay Barnabás, Nagy Mari Tartalom: Közvetlenül a háború utáni Magyarországon egy magányos, finom lelkű nőgyógyász rendelőjébe elhoznak egy kissé dühödt, késő pubertás korral és családja elvesztésével küzdő vadóc kamaszlányt. Az orvos személyében a kislány azonnal felismeri a lelki társat. Hiszen egymástól függetlenül ugyanazt a traumát élték át, szeretteik elvesztését. Classic War Movie - I saw it last night - I want to see it again - when the movie ended - no one wanted to go home 😀. Primeira guerra pelo barão vermelho tinha um respeito enorme. George Mackey does have a very old fashion british face, that is a look Ive seen in many early british movies or tv shows of lower class Brits you see in various series. Its a look that appears to be basically british. It was very emotional to see schofield in that truck looking at the little yard where blake was killed getting further and further, with everyone around him telling jokes.

這是講哪一場戰役?. This film is an immersive and wholly impactful experience showing viewers just how visceral and hellish it was to be in combat during World War I. Directed by Sam Mendes and stunningly shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, this film tells the story of two young British soldiers who are given orders by their superior to deliver a message to prevent an attack in a seemingly distant area of France. The film is (mostly) shot and tightly edited to appear akin to one continuous shot that grabs the viewer's attention and never lets go.
The intensity of the film is almost heart-stoppingly powerful. Viewers really feel the tension and anguish that countless young men were forced into during the war. The use of tracking shots and differentiating scope and scale further make the film's war action seem even more impactful. Its production design is outstanding, with unbelievably detailed recreations of various landscapes of the Western Front. Two the surprise of no one, Deakins' cinematography is remarkable both in its ambition and its execution. The film is incredibly well-acted, and also manages to develop its characters well, almost placing their current states of being into a figurative tapestry summing up the film's primary messages and intended takeaways about the war in the exact moment in which it is set. All of the film's scenes and major setpiece moments are superbly edited not only to look like one take, but to establish stunning tightness and cohesion to the narrative.
While the film is undoubtedly great, it's not quite perfect because it could have used some contextualization about what exactly was going on in the war during this exact time in 1917. Even though I'm a history buff to some extent and knew the basics of that, I would have appreciated some more specific information. It would have been possible to do this without breaking the film's "one-shot" style, as such context could have been revealed through dialogue or visually. This is the main reason that, while a very strong achievement without question, this film does not quite rise to the level of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk, another visually immersive representation of a short time frame in a terrible 20th-century war. The time span of the film seems very slightly contrived as well.
That said, this is probably the most unique and detailed portrait of World War I since "All Quiet on the Western Front, and I absolutely recommend it. 8/10
NOTE: I saw an advance screening of the film in RPX (Regal's premium large format.) While the picture and sound quality were good, I still feel that RPX is inferior to Dolby Cinema and IMAX.

Critics Consensus Hard-hitting, immersive, and an impressive technical achievement, 1917 captures the trench warfare of World War I with raw, startling immediacy. 89% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 416 88% Audience Score Verified Ratings: 30, 239 1917 Ratings & Reviews Explanation Tickets & Showtimes The movie doesn't seem to be playing near you. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2019 Format: Prime Video “Dark Waters” Distributed by Focus Features, 126 Minutes, Rated PG-13, Released November 22, 2019: There’s a scene in the 1976 political drama “All the President’s Men” in which Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford as Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward need to request from a Library of Congress staff member every checkout slip processed in the past three years in one of the largest libraries in the world. “I’m not sure you want ‘em, ” the sympathetic librarian tells them, “but I got ‘em. ” And in the next shot, the camera slowly pans upward to see the two reporters beginning to sift through tables and tables filled with hundreds of thousands of library checkout slips, in an attempt to find a single clue which will help them to solve the mystery behind the Watergate break-in. There’s a similar scene in “Dark Waters, ” the new fact-based legal thriller from Focus Features now playing in movie theaters across the United States. In the scene, the intrepid attorney played by actor Mark Ruffalo requests from the gigantic DuPort chemical conglomerate records of research material related to the manufacture of one specific compound. In reluctant compliance with the request--as well as an effort to discourage any future investigation by the government--DuPort sends the attorney dozens and dozens of packing crates filled with records. And with a sigh, Ruffalo as the attorney hunkers down in his law firm’s conference room to begin the Sisyphean task of examining the hundreds of thousands of documents, one by one. Both scenes are important to their pictures’ narratives, enormously revealing background touches in unusually engrossing movies. The purpose of the segments is plain--that any result, is desirable enough, is worth working for. If “Dark Waters” and 2000’s “Erin Brockovich” were playing as a double feature at a drive-in theater, you might feel compelled to leave halfway through the second matter which picture played first. But sometimes surface resemblances can be misleading--while the two pictures have similarities and both are informative and richly entertaining movies, a major difference is that the older picture’s conclusion is more because the events of “Dark Waters” are still playing out. Adapted by screenwriters Mario Correa and Matthew Michael Carnahan from writer Nathaniel Rich’s New York Times Magazine article “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare, ” in “Dark Waters” a successful and upwardly mobile attorney for a prosperous corporate legal firm places his carefully-plotted career on hold to help a rural farmer pursue a complaint of a local refinery’s waste water is poisoning his discovers that the case leads to the highest echelons of corporate America. If neither DuPont nor Teflon are among the sponsors for this year’s Academy Awards broadcast, don’t be surprised to find Mark Ruffalo’s name among the Best Actor nominees for his role in “Dark Waters. ” Ruffalo is the rare performer who puts his money where his mouth is--a dedicated social activist as well as a gifted actor. When the actor combines the two pursuits, people tend to take notice: 2015’s Academy Award-winning “Spotlight” is an example. In “Dark Waters, ” Ruffalo seems to be trying hard to blend into the ensemble--after adding a few pounds to portray the real-life Robert Bilott, the actor resembles Oliver Platt--but his talent, and his social conscience, shine through in every scene. “Dark Waters” is good, solid, smart motion picture entertainment. You have to work a little to keep up with the plot development--this is one picture for which your ninth grade chemistry will come in handy--and the picture’s conclusion isn’t completely reassuring. The ultimate message is as sobering and troubling as it is inspiring: ”THEY don’t protect us--WE protect us. ” But if you think about it, that’s what Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams, and the other founding fathers were telling us all along. Supporting Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway disguised in a succession of unflattering black wigs is wasted in a nothing role as Ruffalo’s brittle wife, but the reliable old pro Bill Pullman has fun in a showy little role as a seasoned and wiley small-town country lawyer who’s amused to find himself taking on big business for the first time in his career. And ubiquitous supporting player Bill Camp has the role of a lifetime, so persuasive as the crusty West Virginia rancher whose problems set the plot in motion that the viewer might well mistake him for the real deal. Directed by Todd Haynes, “Dark Waters” is earning superb reviews from the critics, including an approval rating of 97% from Rotten Tomatoes and 93% from Metacritic. The picture’s been gaining momentum at the box office--originally placed into a limited release pattern in only five locations across the United States and Canada, the film expanded into 94 theaters during its second week and entered the Box Office Mojo charts in eighteenth place. Now playing in 2012 theaters across the US--about half the number as, say, “Frozen II”--the picture has risen to an impressive sixth place in the Box Office Mojo Top Ten. “Dark Waters” is rated PG-13 for some disturbing images, and strong language. Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2019 Format: Prime Video This is what cinema should be, but very rarely is... a film that deepens our understanding of our world and our lives with drama, script and performances. In the end, it might even save our lives. Thank you, Mark Ruffalo, Todd Haynes, you did yourselves proud. Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase WOW!!! OUTSTANDING CINEMA!!! Heart-felt, well executed, powerful drama!!! All-star cast delivers first-class performances!!! Fact based thriller that will keep you glued to the screen!!! Mark Ruffalo did an outstanding job of being loveabley believable!!! In the vein of CLASS ACTION or A CIVIL ACTION,... yet horrifyingly true!!! PERFECT PURCHASE!!! For your family night explanation of the Deep-State!!! Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2019 Format: Prime Video "Dark Waters" (2019 release; 126 min. ) brings the story of Cincinnati lawyer Rob Bilott's long legal battle against DuPont. As the movie opens, it is "1975 Parkersburg, West Virginia" as we see several teenagers (one of them a young Bilott) go swimming in a lake that we later see being sprayed with chemicals. We then go to "1998 Cincinnati, Ohio", and Rob has just made partner at Taft, one of the large law firms in Cincinnati. Then a stranger shows up who is from Parkersburg and knows Rob's grandmother. The stranger, Wilbur Tennant, claims that chemicals have ruined his farm, he has the VHS tapes to prove it, and can Rob please represent him.... At this point we're 10 min. into the movie, but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all turns out. Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from Todd Haynes, whose prior movie, the excellent "Carol" was coincidentally also filmed here in Cincinnati (where I live). But that is where the comparisons stop. Here, Haynes brings to the big screen the long battle that Bilott fought against chemical giant DuPont. The film starts a bit tentative in my opinion, but after the first half hour, the tension doesn't let up as DuPont is fighting with all of its might against Bilott. This movie is a labor of love for Mark Ruffalo, who stars and also co-produces. I've seen a lot of the films that Ruffalo has made in his career, and I don't know that he's ever been better, playing the almost mousy yet determined lawyer. Anne Hathaway seems underused as the supportive spouse but as the movie goes deeper, her role expands. The movie was filmed in early 2019 in and around Cincinnati, and the downtown area is featured extensively, including Fountain Square, the Queen City Club, the Hall of Mirrors at the Netherland Plaza, etc. The movie had a red carpet premiere here in Cincinnati a week before it got a limited release. This weekend it got a wide release, and the Friday early evening screening where I saw it at my art-house theater here in Cincinnati was attended okay (about 20 people). This movie will create strong word of mouth, and if it manages to pick up some award nominations (as it is expected), this could have a decent run in the theaters. If you are interested in a tense legal drama where Mark Ruffalo shines, I'd readily suggest you check this out, be it in the theater, on VOD, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray. Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Watched it with my 13 year old daughter. We both loved it. The acting is impressive, the story tied and well-told, and the director respects and values its audience. The story is so important, everyone should see it, regardless of political opinion, education, etc... Unless you're part of the 0. 0001% who just don't care at all and have a dead mind and a heart of stone. Thankful for the real-life people that it depicts. You'll see.

The VERDICT:
Overall, Dark Waters delivered the story I had been wanting to see in the form of a biographical drama. A thrilling case that took years to build is given great detail to help explain everything happening, while also moving to keep you engaged. The acting and multiple aspects really do the film justice and give everyone the chance to act to their top game. It's true it still is subjected to overdramatization at times, but it's kept in check to keep things spicy and appeal to the drama seeking nature that is humanity. I'd have liked a few more elements added to give a better visualization of the corrupt companies, while also giving Anne Hathaway more time to shine, but overall I'm very happy with this. I feel this film will go under the radar, and to be honest, only the engaging story and acting will attract a theater watch for most. However, if you are able to catch this at home or Redbox take the 2 hours to uncover the revolutionizing story that is still going on today.
My scores are:
Biography/Drama/History: 8.0 - 8.5
Movie Overall: 7.0.

I have not seen the movie yet, but it bothers me, that every review I saw totally ignored the fact, that it is not a Birds of Prey movie. Every reviewer correctly reports, that it is a Harley Quinn movie featuring sidelined characters that might become the Birds of Prey one time (maybe even in comic book accurate costumes. When they announced a Birds of Prey movie, I was excited because I like that team and the premise of it very much. But then, the first trailer drops and it highlights Harley with quick shots of the other ones and I was bummed. Since then, every piece of marketing focussed only on Harley (who was never even in the team in the comics. I hoped, that this was just a marketing tool because of Margo Robbies status and Harley Quinns relevance to get butts in seats, because BoP might not be a well known brand for the general audience and the movie itself would be a well balanced BoP movie. But everything I heard so far from every major critic was, that it is a Harley Quinn movie - which would not be a problem for me if the movie was called Harley Quinn. I would have seen it opening night. But the title does not represent the movie. Imagine the first Deadpool movie would have been called X-Men - or how Deadpool came to be. Or they announce Man of Steel 2 and the movie is about Shazam! looking for Superman who has vanished and returns in the last 10 minutes of the movie. I will buy BoP an BluRay - because I am a completionist but a 2020's comic book movie called Birds of Prey should be a Birds of Prey movie with comic book accurate depictions of the characters.

"Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham's most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya's paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down. The booksellers movie review. Movies | ‘The Booksellers’ Review: They Like Big Books and They Cannot Lie Eccentricity and charm abound in this documentary about the rare book world. Credit... Greenwich Entertainment The Booksellers Directed by D. W. Young Documentary 1h 39m There’s a lot of tweed, a couple of pocket squares and an old-fashioned waxed mustache in “The Booksellers, ” D. Young’s charming documentary about the book world — or more specifically the book-as-object world, with antiquarian booksellers trying to reinvent themselves and their industry in a digital era. Anybody curious about the inner workings of unglamorous behemoths like Amazon or the ailing Barnes & Noble will have to look elsewhere. Young made the aesthetically wise choice to focus mainly on purveyors specializing in rare books or niche subjects. Some are inveterate collectors themselves. One bookseller gives a tour of his warehouse in New Jersey, where 300, 000 volumes share space with taxidermied sea gulls and a masonic throne. Two emotional currents run through the documentary. The gloomier one involves the older booksellers who have seen their business transform, especially with the advent of the internet and then, within the last 10 years, the proliferation of smartphones. But the younger people in this film are not only hopeful but enthusiastic. (There’s a frustrating lack of identifying captions onscreen — a puzzling stylistic choice that’s also ironic, given all the anxiety about the printed word. ) This new generation testifies that a long overdue diversification is beginning finally to take place. Women are getting more recognition in the industry, as are people of color. An archivist in hip-hop memorabilia collects copies of magazines like The Source and XXL. And even some of the struggling booksellers are still elated by what they do. One of them, standing amid an inviting clutter, opens up a volume to reveal a lush, life-size centerfold illustration of a fish. “Playboy, ” he says, “eat your heart out. ” The Booksellers Not rated.
